Now a few months have passed again and as a player one can't help but wonder when PB's next game will finally be announced. In the past few days and weeks, Piranha Bytes have given some hints about their next project, which is very likely to be Elex 2. Jenny from Piranha Bytes emphasizes in our forum that the project is taking big leaps and will be announced this year, although it shouldn't be long.

PB have revealed a few more details about the game: They still use their own engine, but there will be new tech and gameplay features. The game is also quite ambitious. Björn and Jenny also give another update in a video from Piranha Becken TV (from 15:48). Accordingly, the team is making good progress and the game seems to be finished in terms of content. It is currently in Quality Assurance. And in another video, they mention that they improved the shooter elements significantly. (Thanks to community member Scrembol for the hints!)

The year 2020 will certainly not pass by without leaving any traces for us gamers. Due to the pandemic, the games industry is also subject to many changes. Game release dates are postponed, presentations are canceled and events such as trade fairs, such as Gamescom, are only available virtually or they do not even take place.
We are all the more pleased that we can present something very special to you at this time, namely "Insights into the Piranha Bytes Team 2020". Because Piranha Bytes presents itself for us with their team!

The developers at Piranha Bytes were nice enough to answer our questions and let the camera take their pictures for you. This allowed us to create brand new profiles of most of members of the team, in which the Piranhas introduce themselves. So now you can get to know the current team behind Gothic, Risen and Elex better! What are their favorite games? What features do the Piranhas want to see in other games? And where do they actually get their inspiration from?

In a new video (with subtitles) from Piranha Becken TV, Jenny and Björn from Piranha Bytes give an update on the current status. Accordingly, the developers are still working from home for security reasons. The new project is going well, but delays have left it unclear when and how the new game will be announced exactly. There will likely be an announcement next year.

As part of another THQ Nordic weekend on Steam, in addition to other games from the publisher, Elex is also significantly reduced by 75% and costs only $12.49/€12.49/£9.99 until September 21st. Additionally the titles of the Gothic and Risen series are also reduced by 75% to 80%.

As Microsoft announced on the official Xbox Twitter account, "hundreds of titles" are currently being developed for the Xbox Series X by around 140 developer studios. Piranha Bytes is also included. Accordingly their next project, which will probably be Elex 2, will also be released for Xbox Series X. However, this does not necessarily mean that the game will no longer be released for the "old" consoles. "Cross Gen" games are not uncommon in the early days of a new generation of consoles.

With a small delay we want to report on information that was mentioned in the official press release on the Gothic remake: While THQ Nordic's Studio in Barcelona is working on the remake of the Piranha Bytes classic, PB's own project will be announced this year:

Q: Is Piranha Bytes involved in the project?

A: No! Piranha Bytes is working hard on a different project, which will be announced in 2020.

As was known since before the release of Elex, the new project is most likely Elex 2. But whether the new game will be released this year can't be said based on this information and remains to be seen.

Surprisingly, THQ Nordic has announced in a press release that the publisher acquired Elex developer Piranha Bytes. Thus Piranha Bytes becomes a subsidiary of THQ Nordic. All brands of Piranha Bytes, i.e. Gothic, Risen and Elex, are now owned by THQ Nordic. However, the acquisition isn't supposed to result in any major changes. Piranha Bytes will continue to develop in Essen, there should be no personnel changes and Nordic promises Piranha Bytes full creative freedom for the future. Elex 2 is also briefly mentioned in the press release. There it says in a semi-official comment: "Have a guess."

Update: As you likely noticed by now, this news is an April Fool joke of course. Risen 4 hasn't been announced and we won't close the website. But maybe we'll find out what PB's next game actually is in the course of this year...

Surprisingly, Piranha Bytes and THQ Nordic announced the development of Risen 4 - Return to Faranga today. As the title already indicates, in the new game you will return to the island from the first series installment. In the process you will reprise the role of the nameless hero from Risen 1 and 2, who only had a short cameo in Risen 3. And as the first screenshots show, you will again spent a lot of time in the underground temples and dungeons populated by monsters. But the surface is going to be a lot more volcanic this time. Today we're not getting to see that though.

Just before Christmas, Elex is greatly reduced: both at GOG - if you prefer to buy the game DRM-free - and on Steam Piranha Bytes latest RPG currently costs only about $20/20€, a discount of 60%. On GOG the offer ends on January 3rd at 11:59pm, on Steam it ends on the same day at 7pm.

Elex on Steam is currently 50% off due to the annual Steam Summer Sale taking place. Other offers include the Gothic and Risen series for a 66 to 80 percent lower price, depending on the game. The Steam Summer Sale will last until 5th July.
